When considering my “list” I thought both about what is culturally important and what I found enjoyable. One likes to think, “what I like should also be what is culturally important.” It’s no the case, ever, with anyone. These list are awkward, yet enjoyable; at the very least they get you and me talking about, sharing, and enjoying music, and that’s the whole goal Get Bent is trying to accomplish. I also went ahead and wrote a little bit about some of my favorite shows of the year.

Memorable Concerts of 2012

February 8^th - JEFF the Brotherhood - Death By Audio | Brooklyn, NY :: The brothers had a night off before ending their tour with The Kills (the last night was a sold out Terminal 5!) who were celebrating their 10 year anniversary. It was a packed night at DBA and I was standing right next to a very tall stack of speakers (which SPIN thinks I blew out an eardrum). I heard everything first and it fuckin ruled.

April 8^th - Angel Olsen - Littlefield | Brooklyn, NY :: While the rest of the galaxies were enjoying a pleasant spring, New York was still fat with jackets and habitual with hermit living. Almost no one came out to this extra ordinary performance of a woman, a voice, and her guitar. She may not be known to incorporate kraut methods to no-wave, but neither did Mama Cass or Loretta Lynn and they still tore shit up!

April 15^th – Peach Kelli Pop – Cake Shop | New York, NY :: Surprisingly the weather let up within a week and with the much appreciated heat came PKP and her dreamy peach punk. They played my favorite song off her S/T album, “Lover,” which I don’t think they did the last time I saw them play, so that was awesome! Also notable to this tour was Seth Sutton (of Useless Eaters) playing bass.

May 16^th - Ty Segall & White Fence - Webster Hall | New York, NY :: During White Fences’s entire set this dude, lets call him Steve - Steve was standing right in front of me and my friends and was tripping on mushrooms. We found this out in two ways: (1) after WF’s set his friend came up and Steve screamed, “I’m fuckin trippin balls on mushrooms bro! YEAHHHHHH” (2) He held up the peace symbol with his hand raised as high as it could reach. At times both hands were up. At times criss-crossing. It almost became spiritual for Steve. Despite the humorous distraction, Tim Presley and co. played what could have been their loudest psych concert ever.

Then as expected, Tim Presley & Ty came out and played songs from their joint Hair release! “Easy Rider,” was not played, but goddamm did they kill, “Scissor People.”

I don’t think anybody thought Ty would sell out Webster Halls main room, but he did and when they played they fuckin killed it. Within my group of friends we had all seen Ty in a number of different show situations and this was the most grandiose; and for good fuckin reason - he worked his fuckin tail off! From the few times we have talked, both analyzing & enjoying his multiple records, and also considering his production credits its seems to me that Ty is on the life long singer/songwriter quest for the perfect song. It may take him his whole life, but no one will be complaining.

I would like to add that beyond saying, “they fuckin ruled,” its very difficult for me to properly describe how surreal it was to see these very prominent musicians in our tiny world slay to thousands of people on stages where acts like Skrillex, Kingsfoil (featuring Frankie Muniz???), and Beach House also reign. And yet despite that they made it seem like they were right in front of you at your favorite dive bar. They sounded big, played their guts out, and each song was killer head to toe. It was a win for all involved.

May 29^th – OFF! & The Coathangers - Bowery Ballroom | New York, NY :: The surrealism doesn’t stop. Never in a billions years did I ever think I would see/halfway meet Keith Morris and see my gal pals the Coathangers play to a huge sold out Bowery Ballroom. I got to kick it back stage, drink free whiskey, talk about Mastadon, stayed up till lunch, and to had to call out at work. Solid night of tuneage.

June 7^th - 26^th :: I was able to go on tour with two of my bands – every night fucking ruled.

July 14^th - Nightmare Boyzzz – Lone Wolf | Brooklyn, NY :: For four days in the summer Brooklyn became home to these southern Alabama rockers. For three of these nights the boys took over duties as managers of good times. Each of there three shows was a reminder of what makes going to shows fun – solid rock n roll numbers, friends boppin, and plenty of beers around. And to make things even better you will never find four more genuine, nice, and spewing of good vibes bunch of dudes.

September 24^th – Thee Oh Sees – Death By Audio | Brooklyn, NY :: Time and time again John, Brigid, Petey, & Mike prove over and over again why they are currently the best and hardest working band in the world. I’ve seen ‘em at a house show, warehouses, opening up for Pavement at Central Park, open lots etc… and each time its mind-blowing! No band in the last six or seven years can or has been able to top their musicianship nor their gravitas.

November 17^th & 18^th - The Mallard – Cake Shop & Death By Audio | Brooklyn, NY :: Rahill Jamalifard (of Habibi) said it best, “they are inspiring.” I saw the Mallard play their two-night stint here in NYC and both times they killed it. Mainly playing new material, with a just a couple tracks from this years stellar Yes On Blood LP, Greer McGettrick’s one woman project has flourished into an amazing psych outfit. In some twist of influence’s along the lines of Syd Barret, MC5, Sonic Youth, and Eric’s Trip - The Mallard make me want to write better, psych out harder, and smoke more weed.
